Slashed Text Generator

Slashed text puts a diagonal stroke through each character rather than a horizontal one. It is made with a combining mark, so your original letters are still present in the text.

Screen readers and search

This style keeps the real letters and adds a mark to each one, so screen readers still read the word and search still finds it.

Usernames are different

Every style here works in a bio, caption, message or status. None of them work in an @username or handle: those fields are checked against a short list of plain characters and anything else is refused. That is the field rejecting the characters, not the generator failing.

Worth knowing

The mark is a separate character stacked onto the letter. It lands slightly differently from font to font, and a few apps strip these marks out.

How it works

The generator appends U+0338, the combining long solidus overlay, to every character you type. That mark is what mathematics uses to negate a symbol, which is why the stroke runs diagonally rather than straight across. Your letters are not swapped for anything: they stay exactly as typed with an extra instruction attached, and no font or download is needed to make it work. Upper case, lower case and digits all take the overlay.

Visually it sits between strikethrough and a cancelled or void stamp. The diagonal reads as harder than a horizontal line, which is useful for crossing out a price, marking something as no longer valid, or giving a caption a struck-out edge. Because of the mathematical meaning, avoid it in text that already contains equations or symbols, where a reader might take the slash literally.

Rendering is the usual limitation for combining marks. Fonts place the diagonal differently, so it can look centred on one device and skewed on another, and a handful of apps drop combining marks when validating input. That is why Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and Facebook are listed as partial while Discord and X are reliable. In return you keep something the letter-replacing styles cannot offer: the underlying text is intact, so search matches it and screen readers read the words rather than character names.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what people ask us most

How is slashed different from strikethrough?

Both add a combining mark, but strikethrough draws a horizontal line and slashed draws a diagonal one. The diagonal comes from the mathematical negation stroke, so it reads as harder and more final.

Does it survive copy and paste?

In most places, yes. Discord and X keep it reliably. Some fields on Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and Facebook strip combining marks, in which case you get plain text back.

Do numbers get the slash as well?

Yes. The overlay attaches to any character, so digits are covered along with letters and most punctuation.

Is it safe to use where accessibility matters?

Safer than most styles here. Your real letters remain, so screen readers read the sentence and search still finds it. The mark itself is normally ignored by assistive software.
