Works in

bio, caption, comment, story text

Not in your @username

Usernames accept only lowercase letters, numbers, full stops and underscores, so no styled text survives there. Your display name and bio are fine.

How it works

Instagram treats these styles as ordinary text, because that is what they are. Every character is a real Unicode codepoint rather than a font file, so the look travels with the paste. It holds in your bio, in a caption, in a comment and in story text, on the phone app and on the web. Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.

The one place it will not hold is the @username. Instagram usernames accept only lowercase letters, numbers, full stops and underscores, and the field checks every character before it will save. Paste a styled username in and the app strips it or refuses. That is not the generator failing. A username is an identity, and identity fields validate against a plain allowlist. Your display name, the line above the bio, is a content field, so that is where the styled version goes.

Safe bets here are bold, sans bold, italic, cursive, gothic, outline, bubble, small caps and vaporwave. Each of those swaps a letter for one styled character, so it renders the same way for almost everyone. Avoid strikethrough, underline, overline, slashed and glitch on Instagram. Those work by stacking combining marks on top of normal letters, and Instagram shifts or clips the marks on some devices, so the line looks broken rather than styled.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what people ask us most

Why does Instagram reject the fancy font in my username?

Because the username field only accepts lowercase letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. It validates what you type against that list and drops anything else. Put the styled text in your display name or bio instead, both of which accept it.

Does styled text work in captions and comments?

Yes. Captions, comments, the bio and story text all take styled characters and keep them after you post. If a paste looks plain, check that you copied the styled version and not the box you typed into.

Will everyone see the same characters?

Most people will. The letters come from blocks that phone and desktop fonts cover well. The enclosed and filled styles are the least reliable, and on older Android builds a few of them can show as empty boxes.

Does styled text affect accessibility or search?

It can. Styles that replace letters are read aloud by a screen reader as character names such as mathematical italic small a, and they no longer match a plain text search or a hashtag. Keep your name, your hashtags and anything important in normal letters, and use styling for decoration.
