Screen readers and search

This style swaps the letters for different characters, so a screen reader reads out character names instead of your word, and the text stops matching a search.

Usernames are different

Every style here works in a bio, caption, message or status. None of them work in an @username or handle: those fields are checked against a short list of plain characters and anything else is refused. That is the field rejecting the characters, not the generator failing.

Worth knowing

Some letters simply do not exist in this style. Those are left as normal letters rather than swapped for something that looks wrong.

How it works

Real small caps in a book are drawn by the typeface. What you get here is different: a set of individual Unicode characters shaped like small capitals, borrowed from the International Phonetic Alphabet and related extensions. Since each one is a character in its own right, the look holds when pasted into a field that offers no typographic control at all.

Coverage is partial, and the reason is specific. Unicode never encoded a small capital Q or a small capital X, because no phonetic notation needed them. Those two letters therefore pass through as ordinary letters and will look slightly out of place in the middle of a converted word. Digits are not converted either. Anything with a Q or an X in it is worth previewing, and a rewrite that avoids those letters usually reads better than the mixed result.

There is only one set of shapes, so uppercase and lowercase input give the same output. Because the letters are replaced rather than decorated, screen readers announce them as phonetic characters and search does not match the text. As a note of context, Unicode's specification states that the mathematical alphanumeric block, source of the bold and italic styles elsewhere on this site, is intended for mathematical notation rather than for styling text. The small capital letters come from a different block, but they were designed for linguistics, not for profile decoration. Use them in content fields, and expect a handle field to refuse them.

Why are Q and X not converted?

Unicode contains no small capital Q or X. They were never needed by the phonetic notation these characters came from, so there is nothing to map those letters to and they stay in their normal form.

Can I mix small caps with normal capitals?

Yes, and it is a common look: a full size capital at the start of a word with small caps after it. Type the first letter as a normal capital and let the rest convert.

Do numbers change?

No. This style covers letters only, so digits are left exactly as typed.

Is this the same as a small caps font setting?

No. A word processor's small caps setting is a typographic instruction applied to normal letters and is lost on copy. These are separate characters, which is why they survive the paste but also why search and screen readers struggle with them.
