Underline Text Generator

This adds a line beneath your text by attaching a combining mark to each character, rather than replacing the characters themselves. The words stay real, which is unusual among text styles.

Screen readers and search

This style keeps the real letters and adds a mark to each one, so screen readers still read the word and search still finds it.

Usernames are different

Every style here works in a bio, caption, message or status. None of them work in an @username or handle: those fields are checked against a short list of plain characters and anything else is refused. That is the field rejecting the characters, not the generator failing.

Worth knowing

The mark is a separate character stacked onto the letter. It lands slightly differently from font to font, and a few apps strip these marks out.

How it works

The generator places U+0332, the combining low line, after every character in your input. Your letters and digits are preserved exactly as typed and the mark tells the renderer to draw a rule underneath. There is no font involved and nothing to install. Because the mark attaches to whatever precedes it, coverage is total: upper case, lower case, numerals and most punctuation all pick up the underline.

Underline is one of the few effects that almost no social app offers natively, which is why this approach exists at all. Discord is the exception, with double underscores producing a real underline in messages. Everywhere else, from Instagram bios to X posts, the combining mark is the only way to get a line under your words at all.

Two things to watch. Because each mark is drawn per character, the underline can appear as a run of short segments with tiny gaps between letters rather than one continuous rule, depending on the font. And some platforms strip or normalise combining marks in certain fields, which is why Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and Facebook are listed as partial while Discord and X are reliable. The upside stands regardless: the real text remains underneath, so search finds it and screen readers read it as ordinary words.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what people ask us most

Why does the line break between letters?

Each character carries its own mark, so the underline is really a row of short strokes. Whether they join into a continuous line depends on the font doing the drawing.

Does Discord have its own underline?

Yes. Wrapping text in double underscores underlines it natively in Discord messages, and that keeps your text fully searchable. Use this generator for apps with no formatting.

Is underlined text accessible?

More so than most styles here. The original letters are intact, so screen readers read the sentence normally and site search still matches it. The mark itself is generally ignored.

Which platforms are unreliable?

Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and Facebook can strip or misdraw combining marks in some fields, so results vary. Discord and X display it consistently.
